Cheval is geïnspireerd op de Nederlandse meubelen van de jaren vijftig. In de jaren van wederopbouw was materiaal schaars en meubilair moest functioneel, economisch en duurzaam zijn. Dit leidde tot een strakke vormgeving zonder ornamenten. De schoonheid werd bepaald door een wel-doordachte vorm en proportie.
Cheval's afgeronde, ongecompliceerde vorm en minimalistisch design past in deze traditie. Daarbij wordt ‘less is more’ niet alleen gevonden in reductie van onnodige complexiteit maar vooral ook in uitbreiding van functionaliteit. 'Doing a lot more, with less'. Grenzen tussen vaststaande conventies vervagen. Wat een bank lijkt te zijn blijkt in een andere context tafel. Of console, of zelfs dressoir afhankelijk van de omgeving. Cheval is koppelbaar. Het individuele gebruik kan overgaan in ruimtelijke configuraties. De banken/ tafels zijn delen die steeds een andere som vormen. Een uitkomst de je zelf bepaalt.
Op Neocon, de vooraanstaande meubelbeurs in Chicago, werd aan Cheval 2x de Gold Award - Best of Neocon - toegekend. Tevens won Cheval de Buildings Product Innovations Merit Award, The Architect's Newspaper's Best of Product Award, The Architectural Products Magazine's Product's Innovation Award en was Interior Design HiP Hospitality Lounge Finalist. Dientengevolge kreeg Cheval veel media aandacht, ondermeer van;
- FM Architecture & Design News; "HBF hit the jackpot with three Gold Awards and two Silver in the Best of Neocon Competition. The Cheval collection garnered a Gold Award in both the 'Tables: occasional' category and the 'Seating: benches' category in the BON competition.
